Introduction / History

The Bariji are a very small people group in Papua New Guinea scattered along the south bank of the Bariji River in Oro Province. Their identity is rooted in a local, riverine setting where families have maintained a distinct name and cultural presence amid Papua New Guinea's multitude of small, village?based communities.

They speak the Bariji language, also known as Aga?Bereho, which is part of the Trans?New?Guinea language family. This language cluster is common in the southeastern "tail" region of the country and reflects long periods of localized development with limited outside influence.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bariji live in a rural riverside environment where daily life revolves around subsistence activities. Families garden for staple crops typical of the region, such as root vegetables and bananas, and fishing from the nearby Bariji River helps supplement their diet. Homes are built using materials sourced from the surrounding forests and riverbanks, and community relationships are central to meeting basic needs.

Travel beyond the immediate area is often by small boats or footpaths, as formal infrastructure such as paved roads is scarce. Access to formal education and healthcare requires significant travel, making community cooperation and local knowledge crucial for everyday survival. Traditional skills and environmental understanding are passed down through generations, sustaining the Bariji way of life in a setting where modern amenities remain limited.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most of the Bariji identify as Christian, though only a smaller portion (between 10?and?50?percent) are considered evangelical believers, indicating that many may not yet have a deep, biblically rooted understanding of the gospel.

A minority in the community continue to follow traditional spiritual beliefs that involve unseen forces associated with nature, ancestors, and daily life. These belief elements can coexist with Christian affiliation, shaping how people interpret illness, misfortune, and success.

Regarding Scripture, translation work in the Bariji language has begun, but there are no known Bible portions, New Testament, or complete Bible available in their language. Audio Bible and Jesus Film resources are also not currently available in Bariji. This greatly limits consistent access to God's Word in the language spoken locally.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bariji need a clear and faithful presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ that leads to personal faith grounded in biblical truth rather than a blend of beliefs. Where Christian identity is present, deeper discipleship and teaching rooted in Scripture are essential.

A major need is the completion and availability of the Bible in the Bariji language so that individuals and families can engage with God's Word in the language of their community.

There is also a need for trained local leaders who can teach sound doctrine, disciple believers, and help establish strong, biblically grounded church communities within Bariji villages.

Practically, improved access to healthcare, education, and reliable transportation would support both physical well?being and opportunities for spiritual growth in their remote region.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Bariji people would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that those who identify as Christians would grow in biblical understanding and not blend traditional beliefs with Christian teaching.
Pray for the completion and availability of the Bible in their language, so that the Bariji can engage directly with God's word.
Pray for faithful local church leaders to be raised up who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced by a firm trust in the truth of Scripture.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation to support overall community well?being.
